It is the distinctive natural contrasts in the landscape that make the Hohe Tauern National Park so impressive. The difference in height between the lowest lying valley and the highest peak is almost 2,600 metres. Rugged, untamed territory alongside cultivated farm land: these are the two faces of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Covering an area of 1.834 km˛ it is the largest protected nature reserve in the Alps. The National Park stretches over primordial Alpine landscapes such as glaciers, rock faces and dense forests as well as well kempt mountain pastures that have been used as cattle grazing grounds for centuries. The National Park came into being in 1981 and was Austria’s first ever nature reserve. Over the years that followed the Hohe Tauern, which is run by the three counties to which it belongs; Salzburg, Carinthia and Tirol, was nurtured and expanded becoming the biggest protected area in the Alps.
